Happy Halloween! It’s October StrideBox review time, and I am squeaking this month’s review in just in time. In case you didn’t know, StrideBox is a subscription box for runners. For $15 a month, you get a sampling of the latest gadgets, gizmos and nutrition for runners. The value almost always exceeds the price, and this month’s box may be an all-time high in terms of bang for your buck. It’s a great way to try out new products. Plus, it’s fun to get a surprise in the mail each month, in between the bills and junk mail. With the holidays coming up, take note that a StrideBox subscription would make a great gift for the runner in your life.

First up is Sword Endurance Drink Mix in an autumn-themed apple flavor.  When I scan the ingredients, they are mostly various forms of sugars, but that’s where the 35 grams of crabs come from – and you need carbs when you are doing marathon-training long runs.

I like that Base Performance Real Bars are made from real food, most of which is organic. Other than honey, they are vegan. These would be tasty for breakfast, with coffee, or after a run for a quick pick-me-up.

Next up is the Phone Grip and Stand. You attach it to the back of your phone like a barnacle. The “button” pops out so you can more easily hold your phone while running, and it is also supposed to work as a stand when you are Facetiming or doing video chats. I wanted to love the mobile phone holder. I really did. But I removed it within a few hours after attaching it (It came off easily). Maybe it’s just me, but I hate clutter so having something attached to my phone just felt annoying. I don’t hold my phone when I run but I tried unpopping the button and holding the phone with it. I can see how it could help, but only if your fingers are small. I also tried propping my phone up as a stand and it did not work at all. Boo.

The Base Electrolye Salts are a great idea. You unpop the top and lick to take in the salts; they recommend one lick every 1-2 miles. This would be useful during summer long runs. It’s small and easy to carry.

Here’s something every runner can use: detergent designed especially for your workout clothes. I did not try this yet, but most reviewers on the Medi-Dyne web site gave it 5 stars.  It’s also safe for regular clothes so you don’t have to strictly sort your laundry. The 2Toms web site says this product is environmentally friendly but does not list the ingredients anywhere. I also could not find any information as to whether this product was tested on animals.

Here’s another useful item for runners: stretchy sports tape. The per-roll price of $1.08 is unbelievably cheap:

This value of this month’s Stridebox adds up to a whopping $30.30 exceeding the $15 subscription price by more than $15 – double the value. So you are definitely getting more than your money’s worth.
