Almost time for spring cleaning – that seasonal ritual when we give everything a good scrub, clear out the dust bunnies, and discard items that are worn out or broken. Similarly, I like to spring clean my health habits and take inventory of my diet. To accomplish this, I do a version of Kris Carr’s 21-day cleanse to get back on track with clean eating and self-care. Since I had been feeling a bit fatigued and have been having some trouble sleeping lately, I figured the universe was telling me it was time to course correct.

Long runs are more fun with company, and so are cleanses. Instead of going this one alone, I decided to invite some friends. This is NOT a diet. This is about learning to take care of yourself for the long-haul, living out loud, and flooding your body with the nutrients and positivity you need to stay healthy and energetic. Eating well is especially important for runners. We regularly tax our bodies with challenging workouts and we need to ensure we are properly fueling the machine.

This cleanse is based on the cleanse Kris Carr outlined in her fantastic book Crazy, Sexy, Diet (NOT a diet book – more like a nutrition bootcamp book):

  • YES! You can EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT. Everything is gluten-free, vegan & centers around yummy, alkaline foods, fresh fruits, veggies, grains & plant protein. Chocolate fans, take heart: Dessert is not forbidden.
  • YES! You’ll start each day with fresh green juice or a green smoothie and you’ll have the option to do a once-weekly juice fast (which I never do because I really need the calories for my training). This said, you will need a juicer for the cleanse, as well as a blender.
  • YES! Cleansing also features meditation and other aspects of self care.
  • YES! You’ll do your favorite daily exercise. (Though if you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re already running or doing something active.)
  • NO! No caffeine, other than green tea; no alcohol, cigarettes or other drugs; no meat, dairy, eggs, or refined sugar.

What to expect…

It’s important to be realistic about cleanses. This is only 3 weeks of your life. You will be trying on new habits, foods and drinks, just like you may try on new shoes or clothing to see what fits and suits you. After 21 days, you may walk away with a pair of shoes – or an entire closet full of new clothes. After this cleanse, you may decide to enjoy a daily green juice or you may decide to incorporate the whole (vegan) enchilada.

My diet, for example, is generally quite healthy, but there is always room for improvement. For me, this cleanse usually teaches me what I need to eliminate or reduce (coffee, wine, sugar!) rather than what I need to add. For you, the opposite may be true; you may need to add more veggies to your diet, for example, and scrutinize labels. Your appetite will likely regulate itself, and you will learn to eat the appropriate amount of food needed for your frame and metabolism. Depending on what your body needs, you may lose or gain weight.

I’m not going to lie. The first day without your vices (coffee, sugar, etc) may feel a bit rough. But by Day 2, you start to feel more like a healthy God or Goddess as the new habits start to take hold. Believe me, you feel like a million bucks when you’re done, and this cleanse gently guides you back into daily good habits.

Two differences I usually experience after completing this cleanse include increased energy and “glowy” skin; green juices are much better for your skin, in my humble opinion, than pricey cosmetic products. This makes sense, since good skin starts from the outside in, not the other way around. I advise everyone to take some “before” photos so you can compare your body and skin both pre- and post-cleanse.

  1. I am a vegetarian but I have a really hard time giving up eggs and dairy. Hmm
